Monetization tools

Monetization tools

Advertising-based Video on Demand (AVOD)

AVOD is a digital media distribution model where viewers can access content for free, with the trade-off of watching advertisements. Unlike subscription-based models, AVOD platforms generate revenue through ads displayed before, during, or after the content. This model provides a cost-effective solution for consumers who prefer not to pay subscription fees, offering a wide array of programming supported by ad revenue. AVOD services are growing in popularity, reshaping the digital media landscape by providing an alternative to traditional pay-TV and subscription services.

Subscription-based Video on Demand (SVOD)

SVOD is a monetization model where users pay a recurring fee to access a library of video content. This model has been popularized by platforms like Netflix and Hulu, offering viewers unlimited on-demand streaming of a diverse range of content, from original series to movies and documentaries. SVOD services provide a consistent revenue stream for content creators and a seamless, ad-free viewing experience for subscribers, making it an attractive option for both parties. With its predictable income and the ability to scale based on subscriber growth, SVOD continues to be a dominant force in the digital streaming landscape.

Transactional-based Video on Demand (TVOD) / Pay-Per-View

TVOD, or Pay-Per-View, is a monetization model where viewers pay per view or rent individual pieces of content. This model, akin to the traditional pay-per-view, allows users to either rent videos for a limited time or purchase them for lifetime access. It’s ideal for content providers with smaller libraries or premium content, offering flexibility for consumers who prefer not to commit to a subscription. TVOD has thrived in the digital era, particularly in the entertainment industry, allowing viewers to access movies or series episodes on a transactional basis, and is expected to continue growing as a popular revenue stream.

Premium Video on Demand (PVOD)

PVOD is a monetization model that offers viewers the opportunity to access new and exclusive video content earlier than its standard release for an additional fee. This model is particularly appealing for highly anticipated movies or special content that viewers are eager to watch without waiting for traditional release cycles. PVOD allows content creators to capitalize on the initial excitement surrounding a release, while providing consumers the convenience of enjoying the latest entertainment from the comfort of their homes. It’s a win-win for both parties, offering early access to premium content while generating higher revenue for creators.

Free, ad-supported television (FAST)

FAST s a streaming service that offers viewers access to a selection of channels and programs at no cost, with the inclusion of advertisements. FAST TV services provide a linear TV experience, similar to traditional broadcast television, but delivered over the internet. This model allows users to watch content for free while the service generates revenue through ad placements. It’s an attractive option for cord-cutters and those looking to supplement their existing streaming subscriptions with more variety.

Membership and Patreon Model

The Membership and Patreon Monetization Model is a dynamic approach to content creation and community building, where creators can earn a sustainable income through a subscription-based platform. This model empowers creators to offer exclusive content, experiences, and perks to their supporters, or ‘patrons’, in exchange for a recurring fee. Patrons gain access to a unique community and enjoy a closer connection with the creators they admire. Patreon’s platform facilitates these transactions, providing tools for creators to manage memberships, sell digital products, and engage with their audience, all while earning money through service and processing fees.

Hybrid Model

Hybrid Video on Demand Monetization Model combines various revenue strategies, allowing content creators to maximize earnings. It integrates AVOD (ad-based), SVOD (subscription-based), and TVOD (transactional) models, offering viewers free content with ads, premium ad-free experiences, and pay-per-view options. This flexibility caters to diverse viewer preferences and consumption habits, enhancing user engagement and revenue potential for creators. Examples include platforms like YouTube and Amazon Prime, which offer both free and subscription-based content.

Dynamic Ad Insertion for Streaming Media

Our combined solution offers dynamic advertising insertion in the whole ecosystem of the content delivery. This method allows for simultaneous display of different advertisements on the streaming media platform.

Dynamic as insertion for streaming media workflow

CSAI and SSAI

In the early stages of the internet, video advertising was mainly implemented through Flash animations or GIF images on websites. As a result, advertising became more integrated with the video content itself, and Ads could be inserted before video playback (pre-roll), during (mid-roll), or after (post-roll). The choice of Ad insertion positions depends on the combination of Ad positions that the video service provider wants to use. There are two methods for inserting Ads into live streaming: Client-Side Ad Insertion (CSAI) and Server-Side Ad Insertion (SSAI). CSAI involves inserting Ads on the client side, where the client requests Ads from the Ad server when it reaches a cue for Ad insertion and plays the Ads during the specified time period. The Ad server provides the optimal Ad to the specific client and responds with Ad information through data analysis. SSAI, on the other hand, directly stitches Ad media files into the video stream (on the server-side rather than on the client-side). This advantage is that Ad content is not easily blocked or tampered with, and the client does not need to make server interface calls to initiate Ad insertion tasks. In contrast, CSAI requires the client to make requests to the Ad server, which can be easily blocked by plugins or other Ad blockers, reducing revenue for content publishers.

SCTE

The Society of Cable Telecommunications Engineers (SCTE) has developed SCTE-35, a core signaling standard for advertising and distribution control of content for content providers and distributors. SCTE-35 defines a binary message format for identifying upcoming Ad start points and end points in a live or vod stream, allowing Ads to be seamlessly inserted and removed without affecting the continuity of video playback. SCTE-35 is composed of SpliceInfoSection, which can be represented as structured data in XML or as a binary structure. SCTE-35 tags are supported in HLS/DASH manifests, indicating when to switch to Ad content during a specified time period. There are three ways to encapsulate SCTE-35 in HLS: #EXT-X-DATERANGE, EXT-X-CUE-OUT and EXT-X-CUE-IN, and EXT-X-SCTE35. These tags allow the program to get Ad information from the Ad decision server after reaching the Ad cue.

VAST

VAST (Video Ad Serving Template), VPAID (Video Player-Ad Interface Definition), and VMAP (Video Multiple Ad Playlist Protocol) are the main Ad-serving standards established by the IAB (Interactive Advertising Bureau). VAST is the standard between the Ad playback end and the Ad service provider, connecting content producers, content distributors, and Ad statisticians. Ad types that comply with VAST include Linear Ads, NonLinear Ads, Companion Ads, Skippable Linear Ads, and Ad Pods. These standards help all participants in the advertising ecosystem work closely together in the process of creating, editing, delivering, and tracking Ads.
